Skin lesions associated with internal organ diseases are called “dermadromes.”

If you experience intense itching despite the absence of visible rashes or lesions (like eczema or hives) on your skin, it might be “pruritus” (skin itching without a primary rash).

Pruritus, in particular, tends to become more severe at night before going to sleep. This is thought to be influenced by factors such as a rise in body temperature, parasympathetic nervous system dominance, and the mind being conscious and awake.

If you leave it alone, assuming it is “just dry skin,” a serious problem may actually be occurring inside your body.

■2. There are also research findings suggesting that substances in the body called “opioids” are involved.

Itching due to liver disease is said to have the following characteristics. Please compare them with your own symptoms:

Itchy even without visible abnormalities: Unlike bug bites or atopic dermatitis, there are no visible changes like redness, swelling, or rashes, making it difficult for an observer to tell where it itches.

Scratching doesn’t relieve the itch: It does not subside even when stimulated, and the constant presence of itching leads to great discomfort.

Appears all over the body: Itching occurs everywhere, particularly centering around the stomach, back, and the entirety of the arms and legs.

Unable to sleep due to itching: The discomfort is so intense that it can wake you up while sleeping, and many people experience disruptions to their sleep.

Standard anti-itch medications are ineffective: Over-the-counter anti-itch creams cannot alleviate the symptoms. Antihistamines are generally not expected to be effective against itching caused by liver disease.

■3. Not Just the Liver! These substances are thought to cause itching.

Diabetes: In diabetes, prolonged high blood sugar can damage peripheral nerves or make the skin prone to dryness, which can result in itching.

Thyroid Disease: Itching can also be seen in hyperthyroidism (such as Graves’ disease) or hypothyroidism (such as Hashimoto’s disease).

Malignant Tumors (Cancer): Pruritus can sometimes appear as an early symptom of a malignant tumor (cancer). However, you can alleviate the symptoms to some extent with the following measures.

Cool the affected area: Relieve the area by cooling it with a towel soaked in cold water, ice, or an ice pack.

Take “lukewarm” and “short” baths: Water that is too hot damages the skin’s barrier function and tends to cause dryness. Use lukewarm water around 38-40°C. Keep it short, aiming for about 10-15 minutes.

Moisturize immediately after bathing: After a bath, apply moisturizer all over your body immediately (ideally within a few minutes after patting dry with a towel).

Choose skin-friendly clothing: Select natural materials like cotton or silk that feel good against the skin and are highly moisture-absorbent.

■Summary: Abnormal Itching is an SOS from the “Silent Organ”

The liver is known as the “silent organ,” and even when a disease is hidden, it rarely causes pain or distress.
